In early 2024, a well-known IT company in Pune was about to onboard a skilled software developer who had passed interviews with flying colors. But just before releasing the final offer letter, the HR team ran a detailed Background Verification (BGV) — a routine step that turned out to be a dealbreaker.

The BGV report revealed something unexpected.

The candidate was already employed full-time at another tech firm—and had been working on freelance projects at night, all without informing his employer. This practice, known as moonlightinig, had become increasingly common in the IT Industry.

The report also flagged that the candidate had skipped PF registrations for some jobs to avoid detection, raising serious concerns about trust and compliance.

Thanks to the BGV check, the company withdrew the offer.

This wasn't a one-off. According to recent data, over 3,200 job offers were revoked in the first half of 2024 due to hidden employment or false claims, a sharp increase from the previous year.

As companies face pressure to hire fast, skipping proper BGV checks can lead to repuatational, legal and financial risks.

Don't let hidden risks slip through.
