The recent bust of a Ghaziabad passport racket—where 22 passports shared the exact same address and phone number—is a serious wake-up call for Background Verification (BGV) professionals.
Fraudsters used high-quality fake Aadhaar cards, driving licenses, and birth certificates to secure real passports. They bribed a police constable to skip field checks and paid a postman to intercept delivered documents.
This case exposes critical lessons for corporate HR and identity screening:
  • Official IDs Aren't Bulletproof: A government-issued passport seems foolproof, but genuine documents can still stem from forged primary proofs and insider corruption.
  • Database Checks Have Limits: Simple online ID verification fails if the original document was fraudulently issued in official records.
  • Multi-Layered BGV is Mandatory: Companies must go beyond basic checks. Effective screening demands physical address verification, cross-referencing candidate contact details, and multi-source background checks.
When corrupt insiders bypass official safeguards, basic screening short-circuits. For hiring teams, comprehensive BGV isn't just a compliance requirement—it is your frontline defense against identity fraud.
